Description
As one of the early Caribbean newcomers to Washington in 1962, Walker was a point of reference for people of the West Indian community who poured into Washington from the 1960s through the 1980s. She guided newly appointed diplomatic staffs during the initial period of Caribbean independence in the 1960s. She reinforced the idea that there is no contradiction in maintaining a Caribbean identity while establishing homes, community, and a new life in Washington.
