This interview with Robert Martell Hill was recorded at the Southeast Veterans' Services Center in Washington, DC.

Hill entered the Navy on December 4, 1995 in Great Lakes, Illinois. He completed his boot camp that winter in -72 degree temperatures.

During his time in the service, Hill carried the flag as a guidon, and worked as an electrician aboard the USS George Washington. During his six month deployment he served in the Arabian Gulf, Israel, France, and Dubai.

In this interview, Hill notes the state of constant readiness he and his shipmates had to be in any time Iraqi pilots were in the air. He also notes that armed conflict became real for him when he took notice of the fact that he planes he was working on came back with no missiles or fuel tanks despite being sent out fully outfitted.
