Subject
History
Urban Agriculture
Description
The Neighborhood Farm Initiative interviewed members of Washington, DC's growing urban agriculture community to document the history of growing food in the city.
Ken LePoer and his wife Barbara LePoer started as urban farmers after they took a gardening course with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's extension program. As payment for the course they were required to complete 50 hours of service in a community garden in 1982. They never stopped, and in 2013 LePoer estimated that they had served over 50,000 hours.
