DC Gardeners Oral History Project - Louise Meyer

Subject

History
Urban Agriculture

Description

The Neighborhood Farm Initiative interviewed members of Washington, DC's growing urban agriculture community to document the history of growing food in the city.

The daughter of German immigrants, Meyer grew up in a Washington, DC household where cooking from scratch with fresh ingredients was the norm. While still a child, Meyer moved away from DC, but, after growing up in suburban Maryland and then living abroad for a number of years, she returned and settled in Mount Pleasant with her husband and children.

Meyer recounts her gardening experiences in Mount Pleasant and at a community garden near American University. Meyer is also a proponent of solar cooking which she demonstrates at local farmers' markets.
