Title

DC Gardeners Oral History Project - Pat Taylor

Subject

History
Urban Agriculture

Description

The Neighborhood Farm Initiative interviewed members of Washington, DC's growing urban agriculture community to document the history of growing food in the city.

Taylor was attracted to Washington, DC by the mild climate and abundance of public park land. She bought a house in Capitol Hill in 1988 and joined Kings Court Community Garden when it was formed 10 years later.

Taylor discusses the demographic change she's noticed among the gardeners in her 10 years at Kings Court. The gardeners were originally single and older, but are becoming increasingly younger families with children. She also believes that the idea that gardens build community is an overly romanticized notion and that more people seem to join for peace and solitude.
