Title

DC Gardeners Oral History Project - Susan Davis

Subject

History
Urban Agriculture

Description

The Neighborhood Farm Initiative interviewed members of Washington, DC's growing urban agriculture community to document the history of growing food in the city.

Davis began gardening at the Rock Creek Park Community Garden soon after arriving in Washington, DC. She had previous urban gardening experience from her time in Ann Arbor, Michigan where she was part of the early movement toward self sustainability in the early 1970s.

Davis discusses the challenge of gardening near Rock Creek Park's large deer population, noting that there was a time when few people wanted to take a plot in the Rock Creek Garden because there was so little chance of produce making it to the end of the season. Now, there is an extensive waiting list like most other gardens in the city.
