Description

The Neighborhood Farm Initiative interviewed members of Washington, DC's growing urban agriculture community to document the history of growing food in the city.

Scheltema was born in Washington, DC, but raised in rural Maryland and Pennsylvania. Her parents were part of a 1970s trend that saw young people moving to the country and living a life of self sufficiency.

Scheltema brought this mentality with her when she returned to Washington, DC, helping to found the Brookland Community garden in 1996. She and a dedicated group of neighborhood women overcame a number of obstacles to built the garden. When the Brookland garden closed, Scheltema moved her plot to the Mamie D. Lee garden.
