Description

This 27 minute documentary uses alumni oral history testimony to tell the story of the historic Military Road School in the Brightwood neighborhood of northwest Washington, DC.

The school was founded in 1864 as part of a freedmen's camp near Fort Stevens, one of the several forts surrounding the capital city during the Civil War. The current school building was constructed in 1912 and long served as one of the only places in Washington, DC where african american children could get a public school education.
