Subject

Autobiography
Description
The late Deacon John R (Milton) Chambers, one of the longest serving Deacons of our church, learned to read when he was 70 years old through a DC Literacy Program. Paula E. Dickerson Hawkins served as his reading coach, and wrote the forward to the book. The first chapter of this book became the winning essay at the Annual Literacy Banquet in May 1998, held at the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Washington, DC. The page shown, handwritten by Chambers, tells of his vision for improved law enforcement, more facilities for the homeless, and the end of drug use within the city.
