Description

This Sunday School journal book was passed on from Deacon Gladys McKenzie, age 105, to MMBC’s Bishop C. Matthew Hudson and Deacon Joseph Carter, in August 2012. Its entries, all handwritten in pencil, cover Sunday School classes from March 1926 through July 1931. This sturdy-bound book has a burgundy colored binding and dark brown front and back covers. It contains more than 350 ruler-lined pages. The daily entries record the regular, weekly practices of the Sunday school, including the selection of a "key passage" from the bible, and the collection of an offering from pupils.

(Page 1) The lesson for March 14, 1926, titled “Christ’s Last Words with His Disciples,” is taken from John 14:1-17. The report also includes the number of pupils, teachers and officers in attendance, collection taken, the class who received the offering banner, and closes with the names of the Sunday School Superintendent Maria Marshall, and her assistant. Matthews Memorial Baptist Church was not quite five years old at this time.
