Description

This pocket-size Gideon Bible, New Testament, belonged to Deacon John H. Beasley. He identified it with his name, address and the date, probably for when he acquired it. The late Deacon Beasley was the first member baptized in the baptismal pool of our new church edifice, in 1960, when Matthews Memorial Baptist Church moved from 2627 Nichols Avenue to 2616 Nichols Avenue. The name of the Avenue was changed to Martin Luther King, Jr., Avenue, in 1971. Deacons always carry a Bible with them. The bible was contributed to the Matthews Memorial Baptist Church historic collection by Deacon Beasley's daughter, Joan T. Butler Holmes.
