MMCE choir robe (left) – In March 1978, the anniversary of the Young Adult Fellowship Choir (YAF) was renamed to the Matthews Memorial Choral Ensemble (MMCE) and the old choir robes replaced with the new robe as shown at left. Brother Nathaniel Buchanan was the president of the choir at that time. Upon Sister Marguerite Parker’s leaving the choir, Sister Malinda Ellerbe remains the only original member of this choir still singing at MMBC, in 2012. The choir was under the leadership of Brother Russell L. Williams, pianist and choir director. The robe is winter green and cream or white in color. Robe donated by former member Sister Della Tanner.
Mass Choir robe (right) – This robe is representative of the robes worn by the Mass Choir for the first time on June 22, 1996, in concert with Gospel Singer Albertina Walker at the Lincoln Theater in Washington, DC. The occasion was in celebration of the Matthews Memorial 75th Church Anniversary. The choir was under the direction of Sister Ethel Bothuel, and assisted, for this performance, by Mr. Rickey Payton. Songs sung at the performance were: “Jesus is a Rock,” “Stand Still (and see the salvation of the Lord).” The choir accompanied Ms. Walker in singing her well-known song “Shady Green Pastures.” The robe is gray and salmon pink in color. Robe donated by Deacon Frances M. Bullock.
