    Description

At the age of sixteen, R. Dwayne Betts, a good student from a lower-middle-class family carjacked a man with a friend. He never held a gun before, but within a matter of minutes he had committed six felonies. A bright young kid, he served his nine-year sentence as part of the adult population in some of the worst prisons in the state. Betts documents his coming of age in prison in his memoir "A Question of Freedom." Betts, Justice for DC Youth executive director Shani O'Neal, and other speakers (TBA) raise questions about the treatment of juveniles as adults in the criminal justice system and the diminishing opportunities for second chances in a system long overdue for reform.

Presented with AED, Justice for DC Youth, and Provisions Library for the 2010 Big Read DC as part of a special series focusing on youth justice. No Admission Fee!
